NYERI THINGS: Woman charged with using child to beg

A Tanzanian woman who has been using her eight-year-old disabled child to beg for money has been convicted.

Bilha Joseph, who is also serving a three-month prison term for being in Kenya illegally, was convicted by Resident Magistrate Ruth Kefa after she admitted to committing the offense.

The magistrate, however, failed to sentence her on the charges of child abuse after the prosecution failed to present the facts of the case.

Ms. Joseph was arrested on January 11, 2018, outside the Nyeri Catholic Cathedral.

Police recovered a plastic tin with Sh160 in coins. At the Nyeri Central Police Station, where she was taken for interrogation, police discovered she was in the country illegally.
