DEMOCRACY IN SCHOOLS

Gone are the days when teachers convened in staffrooms and chose student leaders.In most cases, election at primary school level is never a big deal.

Going by what happened in Aga Khan Primary it shows that leadership has really changed at primary school level.It is taken seriously that is why no mistake is to be made while selecting leaders.

The Aga Khan Primary School in Kisumu invited the IEBC to help them with the process of selecting student leaders.This was done in an effort to conduct free and fair elections

According to the school’s headteacher Kerry Ouma, some of the reasons why schools were experiencing unrests is due to teachers imposing student leaders on students.

He further said that it is good for schools to seek an expert to oversee elections in schools to ensure free and fair elections.
For those who wanted to vie as students leaders, they had to undergo vetting.
Some of the things that were being looked at were academic performance, personality, and discipline.

Students that were eligible to vote were 370.The lower classes of 1-3 did not take part in the process of voting for the school leaders but only voted for their class representatives.
