The beauty of sports is
that there is always room to make mistakes and the fun in it, is realizing our
mistakes and making corrections. Players on offence in a game of basketball
often miss shots but the beauty is that if the opponent’s defense is not keen,
they may get a chance for a rebound and they have an obligation to make a
basket. In fact, the rule is that on offense, when one player is making the
shot. The other four must anticipate a rebound. They ought to be ready to pick
up the ball and rise again. Maximizing your opportunities in the game of
basketball is the answer.
I guess this is the
lesson for this week. In life just like on offense we often make mistakes. The
only difference is, how we react when this happens. Do we hate ourselves? Do we
lose a bit of our self-esteem? Do we look for other people to blame? While all
these are expected reactions, the best just like a basketball player would be
to pick up the rebound and move on. Have we made mistakes of falling in love
with people who do not even appreciate us? Have we been betrayed by our
friends? Have we failed and felt hopeless? Have we made poor investments in
business? I wish to make a case that some of the greatest inventions and
discoveries were made by people who failed a thousand times, some of the
greatest leaders in the world today lost elections many times but the
difference is, they learnt to pick the rebound.
