Why Uhuru, Raila handshake is the best thing to ever happen

The coming together of President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga is commendable. It looks like the two leaders have the aspirations and desires of the millions of Kenyans at heart and it’s now upon us to help them implement the Building Bridges Initiative report that is meat to unite the country.

We must support them because their initiative is likely to herald a new start for a nation that has been divided due to electoral fraud and negative ethnicity, among others, for decades. They have committed themselves to ensuring peace, love and harmony prevails. They have also committed themselves to ensuring we achieve stability, which is very important in ensuring prosperity across the nation.

Kenyans want to get rid of corruption, negative ethnicity, politics of convenience and bad governance and this reports offer us a chance. After that nasty 2007/08 post-election violence, we now have an opportunity to fix our electoral system and never to fight over an election.

Uhuru and Raila’s coming together in pursuit of national healing is laudable and one can only hope their unity lasts. We are a nation that is struggling to establish a functioning educational system, decent and affordable housing, employment for the youth and women and medical care for all, among others. All these can only be achieved if there is a conducive and peaceful environment.

Anything short of that, no serious business or development can take place. If the main political protagonists have decided to bury the hatchet and are now building bridges, who are you to resist and suggest otherwise? It’s our country, let’s show our love to it and do our best at individual level.
