Three killed, 25 hurt in Malindi accident

Three people have died while 25 others are injured after the vehicle they were traveling collided head on Saturday evening accident.

 A 14-seater matatu and a saloon car collided head on at Mida area along the Malindi-Kilifi highway.
Malindi police base commander George Naibei said the Matatu was heading to Mombasa when it collided head on with an oncoming saloon car heading towards Malindi at around 8pm leaving three people dead.
"The saloon car was overtaking when it collided head on with the matatu at Mida," he added.
Mr Naibei said about 25 people were wounded and rushed to Malindi Sub County hospital for treatment.
He said they were still investigating reports that the matatu had carried excess passengers and they could not also establish the number of people the saloon car was carrying.
"The saloon car driver died following the accident but the matatu driver survived and has been admitted at the hospital," he said.

 Malindi Sub County Hospital Medical Superintendent Evans Ogato said that 22 patients have been admitted while three were treated and discharged.

 "Two adults undergoing treatment and a child who had been admitted at Tawfique Hospital in Malindi have died and have been taken to Malindi Sub County Hospital mortuary for autopsy," he said.

 Mr Ogato said most of the victims were admitted with fractured limbs adding that personnel had been sourced to handle the emergency.

 Mr Julius Lughanje, a driver with Mombasa- Malindi bound Munawar shuttle said he arrived at the scene and rescued some victims including the matatu driver David Macharia who was involved in the accident.
