Four family members were on Friday morning killed by landslides in Marakwet East. The landslides come as heavy rains continue to batter parts of the country.

Reports indicate that a man, his wife and their two children were buried in the debris. The recovery exercise is ongoing.

The region is among several parts of the country that are receiving heavy rains.

The downpour is expected to continue for four days in several parts of the country, according to the latest weather forecast released by Red Cross on Thursday evening.

The weatherman on Tuesday had also warned Kenyans to be on high alert over the possibility of floods, landslides and storms.

The Kenya Meteorological Department named Elgeyo Marakwet among the regions where torrential rainfall is expected.

Residents at the home where landslides claimed four lives.

Others include Nairobi, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Murang’a, Embu, Meru, Kirinyaga, Tharaka-Nithi, Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Busia, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Nakuru, Narok, Migori, Nandi, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Vihiga, Bungoma, Homa Bay, Busia, Kisumu, Siaya, Kakamega, parts of Kajiado, Marsabit, Mandera and Wajir.

Police say recovery was ongoing.

The weatherman also cautioned Kenyans against floods.

“Floods may suddenly appear even in places where it has not rained heavily, and they can be deeper and faster than they look, especially in semi-arid and urban areas,” the department warned.

Four people also died in Kitui County after the vehicle they were travelling in was washed away while the driver tried to move across a flooded seasonal river.

The incident happened at Mutindi stream near Matinyani market on Wednesday night. Three bodies have been recovered.
