PHOTOS: How many more Kenyan women will die in the name of love?

Over the last few months, news of women being killed by their husbands or lovers have hit the headlines. The continuing trend has raised alarms countrywide that female MPs have launched a ‘Her Life Matters’ campaign to educate the public on the value of lives.

Dozens of women have been murdered in love-gone-sour cases. Some of the suspects in these murders have ongoing court cases while others remain a mystery.

On Sunday, April 28, Grace Kagure of Pipeline Estate, Nairobi, was found dead, naked and with more than 20 stab wounds in her living room.

According to the neighbours, screams were heard from Kagure’s apartment no. b13 around 6am and 7am. Attempts to open the steal door by the neighbours were futile as it was locked from the inside, but kagure was still screaming inside.

When they pipped through the window, neighbours said they saw kagure’s body oozing blood as the suspect, James Wambugu, held a knife on his hand while naked.

Fridah Makena, a vibrant young student, decided to end her life after learning that her boyfriend ‘Kelvoh’ was cheating on her.

According to some of her close friends, Makena often went out of her way to make the relationship work and would travel from Meru to Cooperative University in Nairobi to visit her boyfriend.

“I think what hurt her most was not her boyfriend’s cheating, but the fact that he rubbed it in her face and made sure she knew…she loved him so much and was terribly hurt,” a friend said.

Despite frantic efforts to try and remind her that there is more to life, the girl recorded herself taking many pills and was found dead on March 1, 2019.

Mildred left behind a 9-year-old boy.

“I came to check on her since my mother had called and she wasn’t picking. I sent her a text message, but she never replied yet we were to meet since she was to travel to Dubai today.

“We broke the door and found her lifeless body in the bathtub. Her hands were tied, and the water was running,” revealed George.

In mid-May, the body of a 24-year-old prison warden Pauline Wangari was found dead in her room in Kiharu estate over a suspected love triangle.

“There were three visible knife wounds on the chest and the neck. We heard a commotion in her room on Saturday night before a man was seen walking out after 10 pm,” said one of the neighbors.

The main suspect in the murder, Joseph Ochieng, reportedly confessed to killing Ms. Wangari saying that he strangled Ms. Wangari to death before stabbing her lifeless body with a kitchen knife to create the impression that Wangari had killed herself.

On February 21, Beryl Adhiambo Ouma died after a domestic scuffle with her husband Laiko Osuri at their home in Kahawa Sukari.

A Postmortem examination report revealed Beryl was strangled during her sleep and suffered head injuries as well.
