At least 1,300 migrants escape from Mexican detention centre

Tens of thousands of Central American migrants are moving in so-called 'caravans' in the hope of reaching the United States. [AFP]

At least 1,300 mainly Cuban migrants escaped Thursday from a detention centre in southern Mexico after threatening to set fire to the facility to protest against overcrowding.

The escape occurred at dinner time when several inmates mutinied at the centre in Tapachula, in the southern state of Chiapas, according to witnesses.
