Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha on Tuesday afternoon joined pupils of Kitooni SDA Primary School in Masii, Machakos County, for a mathematics lesson.
The CS had accompanied President Uhuru Kenyatta to Machakos for the launch of the Huduma Number initiative and took time to make observations in the area.
He sat on an empty desk at the back of the classroom as pupils learnt about interpreting time using the hour and minute hand.
The former University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor was recently appointed Education CS and vowed to improve the sector during his tenure.
Last week, Magoha was shocked to find empty desks at the Ministry’s offices and vowed to get rid of lazy staff.
In a video doing rounds on social media, the CS, who was in the company of top officials at the ministry, stated that laxity in his docket will have far-reaching consequences and it is something he will not tolerate.
“People have to sit up and work, otherwise I will remove them. We will get a team that is willing to work,” he said.
He called for seriousness at the ministry and noted that staff need to work without supervision.
“I am not here as a boss. I am one of you but we have to work. If I start coming here at 10am, what do you think people will do? They will start coming here after 10am,” he said.
The former University of Nairobi Vice- Chancellor is considered by many to be the answer to the country’s education struggles and if his previous record is anything to go by, then many expect change.
