The second round of 2019 KCB Road to Karen Masters golf championships moves to the par 72 Nyali Golf and Country Club course in Mombasa this weekend.

Mumias’ Dismas Indiza, Muthaiga’s Greg Snow and Golf Park’s David Wakhu -all fresh from 2019 Magical Kenya Open -are among pros expected at the two-day showpiece.

Others Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK) include captain C.J Wangai, Royal’s Eric Ooko, Great Rift Valley’s Justus Madoya, Windsor’s Rizwan Charania and Muthaiga’s Nelson Mudanyi.

The pros will play a 36-hole two rounds of stroke play on Friday and join Pro-Am in the second round on Saturday.

The pros will battle for a prize of Sh500,000, which is part of the Sh2,000,000 that KCB  has committed for the four events.

Amateurs will battle to fill six slots for the Karen Masters Pro-Am available in every round of the Road to Masters. 

The Road to the Masters series was introduced to help Kenyan professionals prepare for Karen Masters and offer amateurs a chance to brush shoulders with local and foreign professionals in the Pro-Am.

The KCB Karen Masters, which is one of newest rounds of the prestigious Sunshine Tour, which will be held at Par 71 Karen Country Club on June 25 to 30.

Wangai said the rounds will give the Pros an opportunity to sharpen their skills in time for the Sunshine Tour’s Karen masters event.

“The good thing is that we will not rest after the Kenya Open. Golfers now proceed to Nyali for another competitive play.

“We missed out in the first round of the KCB series in Sigona because it coincided with Safari Tour but we are excited to be back in the Road to the Masters,” said Wangai.

Nyali’s resident Pro Ngugi Njuguna said the course is ready. Among amateurs expected include William Kaguta (handicap four), Ken Mwige (handicap 13), Taib Bajaber (handicap 11), Evans Manono (handicap nine) and veteran Gurbux Singh playing off handicap 4.

He singled out hole four as the toughest as it’s a dogleg left, wind off the left while the green is protected by five bunkers.

KCB Group Director of Marketing and Communications Angela Mwirigi said the bank was redefining golf in Kenya by increasingly giving more opportunities to amateur and professional golfers.

“We believe in growing sports talent for local and international competitions,” said Mwirigi.

In KCB Road to Karen Masters first round at Sigona, home club’s handicap 20 Sabo Kalsi led the first batch of Pro-Am qualifiers with an impressive 41 points beating a huge field of 204 players.

Other Masters Pro-Am qualifiers from Sigona were men’s winner Ishwar Aldasani (handicap 24), guest winner Lee Mungai (handicap 22), staff winner Ogola Azu (handicap 26) and lady winner Milka Mburu playing off handicap 26.

The sixth qualifier from the Club was Jolly Esmail, who became the first player in this year’s series to win a wildcard.

The wildcard was decided from a lucky dip conducted on all the scorecards returned by the playing field.
