City Hall spent Sh524 million on garbage collection as hygiene fall short of expectations

It is definitely a matter of conjecture if one was asked whether the streets of Nairobi and its environs are garbage free.

But that notwithstanding, what’s shocking is the amount of money coughed by the county government in the last six months for garbage collection exercise.

In a revelation made by former City Hall Environment executive Larry Wambua, it is now emerging that a total of 14 companies contracted for the exercise received a cumulative amount of Sh524 million in the last six months.

The former county executive was responding to a question asked by nominated MCA Millicent Kagere who had sought to know the names of the companies contracted for the garbage collection exercise.

In spite of the heavy investment, one cannot struggle to spot tremendous heaps of garbage along the city streets and residential estates within Nairobi county. Raising eyebrows over the viability of huge investments in the program.

On February 2019, the county government was questioned why it had awarded sh278 million two-year contract to a farm with no experience in waste management.

Even as the rainy season is approaching time will tell how the county will overcome the blockage of sewerage lines due to poorly disposed of wastes.
