Jail for suicidal mum who butchered son

A woman who murdered her five-year-old son and attempted suicide will be held for 10 days, a Nakuru Court has ruled.

Senior Principal Magistrate Faith Munyi allowed Sharon Wangari, 28, to be detained as investigations into the murder of her son are yet to be concluded.

“The Investigating Officer has 10 days to conclude the investigation and compile a report for court to give directions on the course of action,” ruled Munyi.

She directed that the woman be escorted to Bahati Police station as the probe into the murder continues. Munyi made a ruling on an application made by the Criminal Investigation Department, Nakuru North, for an order to hold the suspect for 14 days.

Wangari who lived in Kiamaina village in Bahati, Nakuru County, reportedly murdered her son before stabbing herself in a suicide attempt. The woman is said to have stabbed her son four times in the chest using a kitchen knife on a Sunday morning.

Police reports state that although Wangari appears jovial, she at times exhibited signs of depression and violence.

“The single mother of one turned the knife she used to kill her son on herself after seeing her son breathe his last,” reads the police report.

The son who was allegedly in pain before his demise made crying noises that alerted the neighbours. They were however too late as he was dead by the time they reached the house.

The mother was found lying motionless on the floor in a pool of blood, while the body of her son was hanging from his bed. The murder weapon was found next to her.

“She was taken to Bahati Sub County Hospital where she was attended to and later referred to Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital,” said the police.

The case will be mentioned on April 2.
