Woman buys own coffin to ensure family does not struggle during her funeral

A woman has shared photos of herself shopping for her own coffin, even though she's not dying.

Zodwa Wabantu, a South African media personality, shared the snap to Instagram of her climbing into an expensive coffin in a post that sparked confusion among her followers.

She wrote: "Death! Society is so afraid to talk about death. We all gonna die, and I made a choice to purchase my Coffin while alive. Its worth 150k." (£8540).

Although her decision to purchase the item may seem bizarre, there's actually a sad reason she did it.

Speaking to TshisaLive, Zodwa explained that when her mother passed away she was buried in a cheap coffin and she didn't want the same for herself.

She added that she wouldn't want her family, and especially her son, to have to scrabble together the money for funeral costs should anything happen to her - so she was looking for peace of mind.

"When we buried my mother, it was a sad affair. She was buried in a cheap coffin and her funeral came together on things that were patched together.

People always told me that I would never amount to much and would suffer the same fate, so I've been living my whole life trying to prove them wrong," Zodwa said to Tshisa Live, Briefly reported.

Her fans on Instagram have had mixed reactions to her unusual purchase.

Some have applauded her for being "prepared", with one commenting "all of us are going there whether we like it or not".

Meanwhile, others think that buying a coffin seems like bad luck, with one of her 555,000 followers describing the buy as "madness".
