Man kills teenage wife and commits suicide

A 21-year-old man has killed his wife and committed suicide over domestic problems.

Paul Ochieng killed his wife Beryl Atieno, 18, at Ober Village in Ndhiwa sub-county on Saturday, by hitting her with a piece of wood.

He later committed suicide by taking poison

Mr Ochieng is reported to have been angered by his mother-in-law who wanted the couple to divorce.

Witnesses said the mother-in-law had been pressurising her daughter to quit the marriage and go back to school.

Ms Atieno dropped out of secondary school in Form Two. According to area Chief Mark Ongoro, the couple had been married for only 10 months.

Mr Ongoro said the couple engaged in a fight when Atieno went to pick her clothes from Ochieng’s house.

“The woman’s mother wanted her to go back to school. And that is what angered the husband,” Ongoro said.

He added that Ochieng had earlier been spotted at Pala trading centre where he bought the poison.

Ndhiwa OCPD Dishon Chadaka said investigations have been started on the matter.

The two bodies were later taken to Homa Bay County referral hospital mortuary.

Meanwhile, a child’s body was found floating in Lake Victoria at Goye beach in Bondo sub-county.

The body was retrieved on Saturday evening after police were notified by fishermen about it.

According to witnesses, the child was seen at the beach at around 5pm, with a woman believed to be his mother.

Confirming the incident, Usenge Assistant Chief Manase Osuri said the child is suspected to have drowned together with his mother.

“We were informed that a woman drowned and police have already launched investigations to establish whether it was an accident or suicide,” said Osuri.

He added that the woman is yet to be identified.
