Monica’s father reveals daughter’s relationship with powerful South Sudanese politician

Monica Kimani’s father Paul Ngarama has revealed that his daughter was not married to South Sudanese Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Awet Akot but the politician is close to the family.

There was talk that Monica’s relationship with Akot had significantly improved her societal status and turned around her family’s fortunes, claims that were dismissed by her family.

Ngarama once worked as a newspaper vendor in Juba and sources reveal that Akot helped him to establish several churches in the area due to his influence.

After settling in Juba, Ngarama invited Monica over in 2013 and she got a job in the Governor’s office.

The two reportedly got along well and Monica often accompanied him to functions.

Akot is a graduate of the Sudan Military College and before serving as a Lieutenant Colonel, he underwent additional training in the United States.

He was one of the trusted men in the late John Garang’s inner circle and was appointed as one of the eleven alternate members of the SPLM/SPLA Political-Military High Command.

Akot also became governor of Bahr el Ghazal and the overall commander of SPLA forces in that region.

Police are still piecing together evidence to bring Monica’s killers to book and Joseph Irungu is the prime suspect.

Reports indicate that Irungu aka Jowie was the last person who was seen at Monica’s apartment donning a white kanzu.

On Tuesday it emerged that he made frantic calls to his friends on the day Monica was killed - seeking advice on an issue that was disturbing him.

The identities of the people he contacted are yet to be revealed but if investigations reveal they knew about the crime and failed to report to authorities, they will be charged with accessory to murder.
