Kenyan man kills himself after shooting wife with stolen gun

A man has committed suicide after shooting his wife.

Ibrahim Ewoi shot himself in the head with a G3 rifle on Monday after shooting his wife, Purity Elim, 20, twice in the leg at Marigat.

The 30-year-old was said to have stolen the gun from a police officer after getting him drunk.

Bartum Location Chief William Chebii said the couple was having a domestic wrangle.

“The two had issues which I handled. The man was, however, not cooperative to have the issues addressed,” he said.

After stealing the gun, Mr Ewoi told his friends that he had 12 bullets he intended to use on someone and himself.

A police source told The Standard that Ewoi stashed the gun in a sack.

"The man was with the officer. (Ewoi) bought him some chang’aa and the officer got drunk. He then managed to take the gun from him,” said the officer.

Police said the officer had been arrested.

Sources said Ewoi and his wife had been separated for six months.

He went to his in-laws' home - in the same village - and shot his wife, then turned the rifle on himself.

But Ms Elim said they had been separated for two years. She claimed Ewoi was abusive.

While narrating her ordeal at a Baringo County Hospital ward, she said her estranged husband had often threatened to kill her.

"Every time we quarrelled, he warned me that he would one day shoot me dead," she said.

She added that she was shot in the right leg twice before Ewoi fled. Baringo County AP Commandant Robinson Ndhiwa declined to comment on the matter.
