Another Chuka University student commits suicide - hangs himself on mango tree

A student from Chuka University committed suicide barely a fortnight after his classmate did the same.

Michael Gikonyo’s decomposing body was found hanging from a mango tree near the men’s hostel on Monday, April 23.

The second-year Computer Science student is said to have gone missing since Wednesday, April 18.

According to Chuka OCPD Barasa Sayia, Gikonyo’s body was discovered by an outsider.

“The body had already started decomposing showing that it had been out there for some days,” said the OCPD.

The body was later taken to Chuka County referral Hospital as police continue to investigate the incident.

According to the roommate of the deceased, Gikonyo had threatened to kill himself a while back and even wrote a suicide note. He added that Gikonyo, who did not attend most of his classes and failed in them, went missing and was unavailable on phone.

Gikonyo’s scenario could be similar to Kevin Mugendi’s, a second-year who also committed suicide and left a note behind for his ‘cheating’ girlfriend.

According to JR Saitoti, Secretary General of the students’ union, Kevin committed suicide on Wednesday night, April 4. He confirmed that Kevin also wrote a letter to his mother before he died.
