Why did Uhuru, Ruto and Kalonzo skip Nyenze Burial?

President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto were expected at the burial ceremony of Kitui West Member of Parliament Francis Nyenze but instead, the president had The Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi represent him.

While reading the speech, the speaker of the National Assembly did not give a reason as to why the President was absent from the burial ceremony of the late MP.

Some would say President Uhuru and his deputy failed to attend the burial since they were receiving President of the Republic of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni on the same day.

However, speculations have it that President Uhuru’s presence at the burial would have been awkward because of the political tension between him and National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga.

Another speculation is that there would have been tricky moments for President Uhuru meeting Raila at the burial in a Wiper/NASA zone, where the governor, Charity Ngilu, is also an Opposition supporter.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga were to meet for the first time since the Supreme Court dismissed the two petitions filed challenging the President’s second win.

Also missing from the burial was Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka who is still away in Germany attending to his wife in hospital.

Mr Musyoka was expected to be back in the country on Sunday evening 17 November but failed after he missed his flight.

During the burial Mr Odinga said that he is ready to face the death penalty after he is sworn-in.

"They should stop trying to intimidate me about treason. I am ready to be sworn in and die. We will be sworn in na wafanye vile wanataka kufanya (let them do whatever they want)," said Raila.

"Kenyans will not continue going to the polls only for their will to be overturned by a few crooked people," he added.
