Kirinyaga County is ready for 2022, wrangles between Women Rep and Governor indicate

Just three months after the August 8 elections, Kirinyaga County is already in a campaign mood for the 2022 elections!

The battle between Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru and the county’s Woman Representative Purity Ngirici is already taking centre stage with the populace already moving into camps.

In a bid to build her profile, Mrs. Ngirici has adopted the Sonko-style model of service delivery creating a competing centre of power with her Ngirici & Sons Rescue Team.

This model was first initiated by the now Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko – then as a Senator – in a bid to create a rival force to that of the then Governor Evans Kidero.

The swift response by the team to emergency situations especially at the grassroots created a buzz for sure – whether this buzz translated into Sonko’s win in the governorship race is debatable.

And so, Mrs. Ngirici is seeking to use this rescue team to flex her muscles and position herself for 2022 governorship race.

To the people of Kirinyaga however, services offered, from whichever political quarter, are welcome.

But one thing cannot be ignored – the people of Kirinyaga are not a very patient lot. For a people who sent home their Governor, Senator, Woman Representative, all MPs and 16 out of 20 MCAs, such power battles could prove detrimental to both the county government and Mrs. Ngirici’s political ambitions.

Just this week, both the County Government ambulances and Ngirici Rescue Team were seen at the scene of a matatu crash along the Sagana-Kagio road, of course at different times.

Sadly, the discourse since then has been who came to the scene first instead of the gravity of the accident, what really happened and the recovery of those injured. And the people are not happy with this.

The reality is that there can only be one government at a time and if the Woman Representative is sincere in her desire to offer services that are similar to those offered by the county government, she should donate the resources she has to the government.

At the end of the day, there can only be one centre of power in any county or country, and in Kirinyaga, power rests with Governor Anne Waiguru – albeit for now!
