Why Moses Kuria does not want the Speaker to pay MPs November salaries

Gatundu South Member of Parliament (MP) Moses Kuria has asked the speaker of the National Assembly not to pay the MPs November salaries during the parliament recession that was to take place on Tuesday 7 November. Moses Kuria said that they do not deserve to get paid since they (MPs) are neither working in their constituencies nor in the parliament.

“Parliament went on recess again today till 29th November as NASA is yet to send its representatives to House Committees. The National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) committees are not in place as a result. The logical and moral thing for the Speaker to do is NOT to pay us our November salaries. Paying us would amount to stealing from Kenyans. Why pay us when we are neither working in our constituencies nor in parliament? Why reward me simply for staying alive?” Moses Kuria posted on his Facebook page.

National Super Alliance (NASA) is yet to send its representatives to the House Committees as the leaders have already started boycotting products linked to the government. NASA leader Raila Odinga started by moving from Safaricom, Kenya’s leading telecommunication network to Airtel. Most of his supporters and other NASA leaders have also done the same.

However, the Safaricom dealers Association has earlier said that doing such a boycott would lead to one million Kenyans losing their jobs.

"We appeal to all Kenyans to resist such calls to kill our economy. Boycotting Safaricom means no communication networks and those who will lose jobs are our brothers and sisters with families to feed and children to educate," said Esther Muchemi, the chairperson of association.

Moses Kuria’s post was met with a lot of mixed reactions. Some congratulated him for what he said while others still went ahead and criticized him saying that he already has too much money.
