Warning shots to DP Ruto after Moi dynasty braves Jubilee wave in the rift

Though Jubilee could boast of having taken most of the seats in the August House, members of the Kenya National African Union (KANU) could as well celebrate, having braved the storm and clinching a number of elective seats in Rift Valley.

Regardless of the fact that KANU faced stiff competition from Jubilee in the area, Gideon Moi and Raymond Moi retained their seats as Baringo Senator and Rongai Member of Parliament respectively.

KANU also won the Women Representative seat and parliamentary seats in Tiaty constituency. The winning run was extended to Samburu County where the independence party won three seats.

KANU was also able to win a parliamentary seat in Narok County and another three in Garissa.

This sends warning shots to current DP William Ruto in terms of the 2022 presidential race, since the DP had expressed his desire to lead the country after the incumbent president.

Ruto’s desired candidate for the Baringo senatorial seat, Mr. Simon Chelugui was defeated by Moi’s son and his choice for the Rongai MP’s seat, Mr. Kibet Komen was also topped by Raymond Moi.

Political pundits had it that the DP’s move to back different persons for the two seats was aimed at ending the dynasty of the Moi’s politically.

During his campaigns in Baringo County, the DP urged residents to vote for Chelugui, recommending a six-piece vote for Jubilee in the area.

Gideon Moi, on the other hand, informed his supporters that retaining his seat in 2017 meant that his 2022 bid for the presidency was still alive, and was conscious of the threat Jubilee posed in Baringo.

He also stated that those fighting him were after selfish interests – claiming some persons in the government had planned to sponsor a rival to compete with him come 2022.
