University student dies after he fell while sliding down a staircase

A University of Nairobi student died on Saturday after he fell while sliding down a staircase railing in a hostel.

Witnesses said Kevin Kimuger Chirchir, 22, of Upper Kabete Campus, lost his balance and banged his forehead on the floor.

The third year Bachelor of Science student had just returned to the hostel at around 8pm. His classmate, Kevin Monda, said he watched as his friend badly injured his forehead.

"I had met Chirchir at Ndumbuini trading centre near the campus earlier. He asked me to accompany him for a drink at a local pub before we came back to the hostel," said Mr Monda.

"He fell from the second floor of the hostel. My efforts to save him were futile as he was bleeding profusely."

Monda said Chirchir told him he wanted to see a friend on the second floor but did not find him. It was while he was returning to the ground floor that he fell.

Monda said his friend was "a bit drunk" at the time of the incident.

"The last thing he said to me was he was feeling sleepy and wanted to go to bed in his room in Tana C Hostel," Monda said.

Another student, Chris Odhiambo, said the ambulance failed to respond when called and they had to call for the university bus to take Chirchir to hospital.

Dagoretti OCPD Rashid Mohammed said the student died on the way to hospital.
