A headteacher frustrates a sick teacher and allocates her work to an untrained teacher

Mrs Colletta Achieng Omboto joined St. Sylvester Anyiko primary school as a teacher in 2014. This was after seeking the intervention of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) having developed health complications.

Her career as a mathematics and science teacher has been crowded in frustration and confusion for over a decade now after an attack by thugs that left her and her son injured.

The attack that took place at the entrance of their home left her with injuries that have seen her health deteriorate by the day.

This year, Colletta has been practically jobless. As schools opened this term, the headteacher decided to assign her classes to a helper teacher the school had employed leaving her without any class allocation.

This was a way of punishing her for having protested a supposed transfer to Masamra Primary school. At the start of this term, Colletta received a surprise transfer letter indicating she had moved to Masamra Primary which did not go well with her.

She says the school is far from her home and given her health conditions, her delivery at work will be adversely affected and thus could not accept the move.

"I sought to join my current school because of my health status, moving me to another school that is far away from my home could worsen my condition and consequently affect my performance as expected in class," she said.

In January, she communicated her decision to turn down the transfer to Ugenya Sub-County TSC staffing officer and even visited their officesbwith proof of health records to inform consideration of her wish to stay at St. Sylvester Anyiko Primary.

She says the TSC Sub-County officer took up the matter and directed her to stay. Inspite of this, the school's headteacher has held to his former position and declined to allocate her any classes for this term despite reporting to work on a daily basis.

"The staffing officer understood my case and granted my request to remain at the school therefore revoking the transfer and retained my transfer letter," she said.

Efforts to get a comment on the matter from the school's headteacher Mr Isaac Aluso have been futile as calls went unanswered and could not be reached afterwards.
