12 billion shillings for compensation of 2008 PEV victims

The government has set aside six billion shillings to compensate more than 19,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) countrywide who were affected by 2008 post-election violence.

Speaking on Saturday when he visited Mumui IDP camp in Mwiteithia, Subukia Sub County, the chairman of the National Consultative Steering Committee on IDPs issues Mr. AdanWachu said that, the 19,000 IDPs came from 80 camps that were identified by government and will be compensated in a bid to ensure that all displaced persons are settled.Another six billion shillings have been set aside to compensate the integrated IDPs.

According to Wachu the government had already bought some land and settled some of them. Others were given 200,000 shillings each so that they can use it to purchase their land of choice or start businesses. He further said that as far as he knows, the government has closed all the IDP camps in face one and now they have embarked on face two of the exercise.

He also said that his committee is on the final touches of auditing a list of the integrated IDPs and urged them to be patient.By so doing it will help them compensate the right people because some people want to benefit from the same yet they are not IDPs.

“We realized that there are some people who masqueraded as IDPs while others received both money and a piece of land from the government. We want to avoid such mistakes and that is why we are cleaning the list of Integrated IDPs that was forwarded to us to ensure that only genuine IDPs are compensated,” said Wachu.

While also addressing them, the chairman of the IDP Network Patrick Githinji told the IDPs to use wisely the money they receive as compensation from the government, in order to lift their standard of living. He cited a case that one of the IDPs was given the 200,000 shillings but used the money unwisely. He ended up committing suicide because life was unbearable. Hw told them to be wise when investing that money.

Meanwhile, the chairman said that his office is aware of some people who are inciting the IDPs to demand more money from the government saying the 200,000 shillings is not enough, and he is working with security agencies to apprehend them.

Mr. Wachu termed these people as brokers with selfish ulterior motives and urged the IDPs to keep away from them.He further said that they have already identified them and they will be arrested.
