This is the price you will pay for not filing your tax

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) closed its online tax filing deadline on 30th June. The taxmen have since maintained this stand on not extending the deadline thereafter. Taxpayers who fail to file their returns will accrue charges of 1, 000 shillings for every day that counts.

However, the charges will stop accruing at 50,000 shillings. That being said, a lot of Kenyans are still in the dark on the reasons behind filing the tax returns. According to most Kenyans details on why the taxman has just decided to be hard on them on filing the tax returns are not clear. This begs the question; could this ignorance be the main reason why over 60% of Kenyans failed to meet the deadline? Should KRA have conducted some form of civic education to inform the public?
