A celebration for Ikonge residents

The residents of Ikonge in Nyamira North Sub-country will soon have access to clean drinking water. This is after Gusii Water and Sanitation Company (GWASCO) started constructing a water treatment plant along the Riabirato stream.

The construction of the treatment plant which kicked off a few weeks ago will serve a high population living in Ikonge market Centre. The project under the construction of Dexterous Limited is aimed at serving the high population which relies on the small stream for their domestic uses. The company engineer Mr. Bosire said that in the next few months the project will be completed and water kiosks constructed from which residents of Ikonge market and its environs will get clean water.

The residents have been lamenting about the dirty water that they were being supplied with by the water vendors who seemed not to care where they got the water from. This was further complicated by the fact that the human activities along the stream have resulted in dirty water being supplied to the residents.

The project will come in handy as it will help the residents to access clean drinking water. As a result, the congestion which is experienced during the dry spell as residents walked as far as 10 kilometers to the stream to fetch water will be a thing of the past. Many at times residents end up with nothing as the queues are long at the two main springs along the stream. Queues are long especially in the evenings and mornings when children are not in school since they are the ones sent on errands by their parents.

The project comes amid criticism from part of the community especially the former leaders who wanted to take advantage and ride on the project as their own projects. Some leaders even incited the community against the project.

However, the area Chief and Sub-chief played a big role in sensitizing the community on the importance of the project which was only meant to serve them. Besides providing clean water to the residents, the project comes with plenty of job opportunities from the laying of the pipes to working in the treatment plant after completion.
