I was a serious CU chick in Campus

I joined African Nazarene University in 2008 for a Bachelor’s of Arts in Mass Communication with a bias for Electronic Media.

My favourite units were ‘English One’ and ‘English Two’ taught by one Mrs Muchai. It basically touched on grammar which I enjoyed since my formative years in primary school.

Raphael Ogutu was my favourite lecturer — he made classes fun and practical. He taught us ‘Research Methods’ and ‘Photojournalism’.

I vividly recall the long photo shoots we took outside class and equally long hours spent in studio editing the shoots using advanced video edit software.

I had a least favourite lecturer but experience has taught me not to bite the finger which fed me.

Outside lecture halls I was a serious Christian Union girl who never dated — I only had friends with whom I had ‘straight forward’ talk.

I played football whenever time allowed, and was a renowned midfielder. I will always remember our soccer team repeatedly thrashing USIU during university games!

I avoided student politics and kept busy with peer counseling, singing in the university choir, nature walking in Rongai town and Christian outreach activities.

My most memorable time in campus was on admission day where I met a lot of familiar faces — I was thus ushered in an environment I had desired. I never used mwakenya because of my strong Christian values .

Ruth Mwanzia graduated with a BA in Mass Communication in 2012 and is currently a Masters student at African Nazarene University.
