Daniel Owira: From 'Otonglo time' fame to pursuing Masters degree in China

Ten years ago, Daniel Owira's life changed for the better after his performance of a narrative dubbed Otonglo Time. This was during the gala of the Kenya Schools and Colleges Drama Festival in State House Mombasa. His performance tickled the country and President Uhuru Kenyatta. The former student of Highway High School in Nairobi ended up at Multimedia University of Kenya where he studied for a degree in Journalism and Media Studies; Film and Animation. Daniel Owira during an interview with The Standard at Multimedia University where he was pursuing a degree in Film Production and Animation. PHOTO DAVID NJAAGA/STANDARD} "I was handed over to the Kenyatta Trust and at that time, I was still engulfed by the fame but they helped me adjust. They told me 'Here you are not a celebrity, we want to make you a better person," he narrated. He added "Although I rarely communicate with H.E Former President Uhuru in case I need anything, it's always provided through the trust by our directors and support staff," After he graduated from the university, he joined the government as an intern in 2021. He later landed another role that he stayed in until this year when he moved out of the country. Today, Owira is pursuing a Master's Degree in Journalism and International Communication at the Communication University of China, Beijing. "On September 9, 2023, I moved out of Kenya for the scholarship which exempts students from tuition fee, teaching material fee, research and survey fee, allowance of English-taught programme and dissertation guidance fee. The comedian-turned-journalist further disclosed that his passion is to broaden his knowledge in communication. He says he aims to expand knowledge, insight and new ideas that will put him in a better position than he was before. "The world is going through emerging changes. and it is closing up to becoming a global village, in the process there are gaps to interlink the processes," he explained. "I want to be part of the solution to those gaps when it comes to communication and to also contribute and be part of international influence," Owira added. Since his arrival in Bejing China, Owira states that he fell in love with the country, adding that the only challenge he has been facing is the communication barrier. He however adds that he pushes himself to be patient while communicating with the locals and the international students. "The sharing of ideas and knowledge has greatly expanded my thought process and how I view the world now," he says. When not in class Owira explores China through interacting with the locals and visiting other cities to deeply understand the society. "Recently, fellow International students and I visited the City of Yangzhou which is part of The Grand Canal which winds through more than 3,200 kilometres and is the earliest," he shared. The Grand Canal is the largest and longest man-made canal in the world.
