UoN doctors to restore smiles of children born with cleft lips for free

The University of Nairobi will offer plastic surgery services to children from underserved communities born with deformities.

This comes after Smile Train - a global renowned cleft focused organisation donated funds to help the institution achieve this goal.

According to the VC Prof Stephen Kiama, the institution is ready to commence the project.

“Our support to patients will involve taking cleft surgical services to our local communities as part of giving our scholars an opportunity to connect with and deliver positive impact in the community,”  Prof Kiama said.

“Out of the five billion people worldwide who lack access to safe, high-quality surgical care, 1.7 billion of them are children... this partnership will be increasing the number of qualified surgeons able to provide safe, timely and quality surgery not only to children with clefts but also individuals with other neglected surgical conditions in underserved communities,” Dr Esther Njoroge, Smile Train’s Senior Vice –President of Global Medical Programmes said.
