By Frankline Okutoyi

Victor Mbuvi is a gospel musician who started singing a decade ago.

His latest song Kwata Kawaya is one of the best he has ever produced. Since joining the music industry, Mbuvi has won many awards among them, Kisima and Groove.

His hit song Kukilya Moko won the best song of the year in 2001. His advice to you: "Choose your career early and start practicing because practice makes perfect. Also, the earlier you start teaching yourself to be the best, the easier it will be for you to excel when you are older."

He answered questions from pupils of Mbagathi Primary School in Dagoretti, Nairobi.

Why did you compose Kwata Kawaya in Kikamba? What is the biggest achievement a musician can achieve?

Mbuvi: I was inspired to do a Kamba song. At times when you translate, you end up losing the feel. Some words will not quite fit. The highest achievement for a musician is when fans are passionately drawn towards the message he/she is pushing through his/her music.

Was music your preferred talent when you were growing up? If yes, what assured you that it would be the best career choice?

Mbuvi: Yes, music was my talent. I loved music when I was young. However, I had to obey my parents who wanted me to finish my studies first because the same principles that make you succeed in school are the same ones you apply in your gift. It’s after school that I pursued my passion — music. I was sure it would work out because I knew music is used in ministry and where God guides, He provides.

Do you like being a celebrity?

Mbuvi: Being a celebrity for me comes as a result of being successful at what I do. Fame, success and wealth are meant to be as a result of what you do, and how well you do it. I enjoy it because I consider it a blessing — I use it to bless and inspire others.

What led you to compose and sing Kwata Kawaya?

Mbuvi: I believe God asked me to do it through the spirit. King David of the Bible inspired me to sing Kwata Kawaya. Kambas are known for guitar climaxes which I call kwata kawaya. Music is important because it captures culture and tells the story of a society. It also stirs up the passions of people and is good for creating awareness towards an important cause.
