Region in turbulence

When she toured Kenya early this month, US Undersecretary of State for African Affairs, Jendayi Fraser, warned the civil war in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) poses a major threat to political stability, security and economic growth in the Great Lakes Region.

Her assessment was based on intelligence reports that point to an escalation of rebel activities in North Kivu, where nearly all the countries in the Great Lakes Region are affected. The six countries are increasingly taking sides with an eye on the massive wealth tucked away in the remote reaches of DRC.
