Couple roughed up by villagers over witchcraft

A man and his wife are fighting for their lives in hospital after they were attacked by irate villagers on claims that they were practicing witchcraft in Taita-Taveta County.

The angry villagers of Mwakishimba village in Wundanyi Division descended on the couple and beat them up accusing them of unleashing ghosts on a local primary school.

Taita District Education Officer Samuel Nyantika, who witnessed the incident, said it took the intervention of police to rescue the victims from the wrath of villagers.

He said the couple was taken to Wesu District Hospital where they are recuperating.

PARALYSED LEARNING

“The man is suffering from broken ribs while his wife sustained body injuries,” said a Clinical Officer who is attending to the victims at the hospital.

Mr Nyantika said he had visited the school after learning that it had been invaded by ghosts that paralysed learning for two weeks.

“The couple was forced to go to Mwakishimba Primary School to exorcise the ghosts that have been unleashing terror on the girls. The man admitted to the villagers that he was responsible for the ghosts invasion at the school,” said the DEO.

Taita OCPD Samson Kinne said investigation had been launched into the incident.
