Khan siblings ready for motor race

With nearly four decades of racing, former Air Force pilot Aslam Khan and his younger brother Arshad Khan have seen rallying go through different guises.

The two brothers are looking forward to this month’s Kenya Airways Safari Classic Rally with great expectations.

The Khan brothers will be entering an ALS Porsche 911 in the event that zooms off from Mombasa on November 19.

The duo have been testing in the KCB Kenya National Rally Championship this season.

The Porsche was prepared by Tuthill Porsche from the UK and it incorporates all the latest specification of components that will be used by the whole Tuthill team of Porsche 911s on the 2011 event this month.

Aslam’s chance to try out their Porsche on the modern 2011 KCB Safari Rally held in Kajiado was not to be missed. Aslam was leading the Classic class of the KCB Safari 2011 when he lost control of the car and it gently rolled over. To his consternation, the car then had a small fire, but the crew managed to extinguish it before too much damage was done.

The Khans have seen rally technology morph through different guises since commencing their racing career in the early 70s and have a penchant for vintage machines 38 years on.

"The car is amazing and has so much more power and handling than the Ford Escort that I drove on the Safari Classic in 2009," said Aslam.

Aslam, 60, was in the recent Guru Nanak Rally crowned the 2011 Classic Car Cup Champion; a title he initially won with his nephew Farhaaz Khan "Fazy" in 2008.

Arshad, 56, on the other hand won the Group N Championship in 2003 navigating Shamash Manji and the navigator’s Classic car Cup this year.

"I have always loved Classic Cars and navigated many drivers including Giancarlo Ciaraldi, Ajaz Mirza, Izhar Mirza and Shamash Manji, but then I have just been preparing the car and managing our ALS Team," said Arshad.
