Make the most of a first impression

Making the best first impression, which only takes ten seconds, is crucial in creating a lasting relationship, be it business or social.

So, how do you make the best of this short time?

Know the criteria: When you meet someone for the first time, only seven per cent of how you are judged is based on how you speak. The rest is based on non-verbal cues, which include body language and grooming.

• Speech: In as much as words account for a only small part of your overall ‘score, never leave what you say to chance. Use polite words such as ‘thank you’ and ‘please’. People appreciate you when you appreciate them. Talk clearly so that people can comprehend what you are saying; otherwise they will dismiss you and the company you represent. Never use slang.

• Names: Using a person’s first name in the first conversation you have shows that you value them.

• Grooming: You should always look neat. People notice your hair and face first. Who wants to do business with an unkempt person? A bad hair day should not cost you a new connection. Your nails should look properly manicured and your mouth should smell fresh.

• Shoes: Untidy shoes show that you don’t pay attention to detail. Your shoes should be polished at all times; remember they are among the first things that people notice on you.

• Walking: People who walk faster are viewed as energetic and important, according to research. Everyone would want to do business with such a person.

• Handshake: Your handshake should be firm and confident; this could mark the beginning of a good business relationship.

• Business cards: How you handle your business cards says a lot about you. Always have a good supply of cards since you never know when or where you could meet a potential client. The cards should be in a card case to protect them from wear and tear.

• Body language: Smile; a warm and natural smile. This tells people that you are glad to meet them. Maintain eye contact to show you are paying attention.
