Village in shock as sisters swap husbands

By George Olwalo

A woman in her early 30s recently stunned many when she left her husband of eight years and moved in with her younger sister’s husband.

The younger sister did not take this invasion kindly and went to fill the vacuum left by her sibling on the other side.

This bizarre incident took place at Kawere Rateng village in Central Kanyamkago location, Uriri District.

Appalled villagers have condemned both incidents, but are particularly critical of the elder sister for starting it all.

The elder woman however sees nothing wrong with her actions and has revealed that the man she is now living with is the father of some of her children.

She says she had a secret affair with her sister’s husband for all the eight years she had been married.

"The man I’m living with now has all along been the love of my life," she told a delegation that went to plead with her to go back to her former husband.

Even more bizarre is the fact that the two men work for the same company and hail from the same clan.

Not responsible

The two were once so close that they regularly visited each other’s families accompanied by their wives.

They even formed a merry-go-round to improve their lot. The dumped husband is a bitter man. He says he was close to his wife’s brother-in-law and had confided in him only for him to betray him and wreck his marriage.

Though he has allowed his former sister-in-law to take her sister’s place, the man feels he is blameless because he is not responsible for the sorry state of affairs.

He says that the blame squarely lies with his former wife and the randy brother-in-law. Sources close to the man say he is bidding his time and one day he will visit his former wife’s new home with the police and demand that she and her new man hand him their belongings as tradition demands.

The parents of the women have sworn to treat the elder one as an outcast. They have ordered her never to set foot at their home again.

Many people are however waiting to see whether these strange marriages will survive given that those involved defied tradition and lack support from the community.
