Kenyans dominate Aviva British Grand Prix

Kenyans dominated the Aviva British Grand Prix in Gateshead at the weekend, to set the pace for the 17th Africa Senior Athletics Championships set for Nairobi later this month.

Vincent Chepkok, who won silver during the 2007 World Cross Country championships in Mombasa, won the 5, 000m race in a time of 13:00.20, beating Olympic gold medalist Eliud Kipchoge to second position.

Kipchoge clocked 13:00.24, while Ethiopia’s pair of Imane Merga and Tariku Bekele finised third and fourth respectively in times of 13:00.24 and 13:01.32. Reigning world cross country champion Joseph Ebuya who won the 12km senior men race in Bydgoscz, Poland in March finished in a disappointing 10th position in a time of 13:11.09.

Olympic gold medalist Asbel Kiprop soared high to win the 1,500m race in a time of 3:33.34 and was followed by Commonwealth gold medalist Augustine Choge in the second position in a time of 3:33.51.

Linus Chumba defeated former world junior champion Michael Kipyego in the 3, 000m steeplechase race, clocking a time of 8:19.72 as Kipyego crossed the finish line in 8:21.91 to settle for second position.

Olympic silver medalist Janeth Jepkosgei finished the 800m race in a disappointing eighth position at a time of 2:01.60. The race was won by USA’s Alysia Johnson in a time of 1:59.84.
