Team work and intelligence won big during the Coast region secondary schools Term One games that ended on Saturday at Malindi High School, in Kilifi County.

It proved that when it comes to winning trophies, it is not the team which has dominating stars that triumphs, but the squad that works together as a team.

During the games, new champions emerged and will be making their debut at the national games to be held in Machakos next month.

In both boys and girls basketball, however, status quo was maintained as former national champions Dr Aggrey of Taita Taveta and Kaya Tiwi of Kwale counties stamped their authority to successfully retain their titles.

Coached by Kelvin Maima, Dr Aggrey did not disappoint as they retained the title with an unbeaten record.

In the final, the champions dismissed their perennial rivals Timbila 49-30.

In the semi finals, Dr Aggrey stopped Kaya Tiwi of Kwale 82-14, while Timbila edged out Mombasa’s Aga Khan Academy 56-46.

Coach Maima said his focus is to retain the title they lost last year.

“We are well prepared to bring the title back to Coast region,” said Maima.

“Dr Aggrey has actively been participating in the Coast basketball league, which enabled the boys face tough teams especially those in Mombasa,” he added.

In girls’ basketball, Kaya Tiwi once again continued to dominate the discipline after defeating their rivals with ease. They defeated Mwasere from Taita Taveta County 107-11 in the final.

On their way to the final, Kaya Tiwi humiliated St John’s Kaloleni 106-1, while Mwasere narrowly edged out Aga Khan Academy 39-36.

Mombasa’s St Charles Lwanga won both boys and girls’ hockey trophies. In the boys’ final, St Charles defeated Kenyatta Mwatate.
