As millions of Kenyans gear up to usher in the New Year 2024, spectacular fireworks displays are expected to light up the skies in different parts of the country.

A spot check by The Standard found that most entertainment spots, recreational parks and even churches have lined up different activities including fireworks displays to welcome the New Year.

In Nairobi, an entertainment company GTC/AVIC plans to spend a staggering Sh150 million on a grand New Year's Eve fireworks show which will be done off their building.

The show is designed and choreographed by Jays Pyrotechnics.

Locals and visitors who have thronged several tourist sites and entertainment joints in Mombasa said they are eagerly waiting to usher in the New Year.

“I will spend New Year’s Eve with my family at the newly refurbished Mama Ngina Waterfront Park. I can’t wait to capture the moments,” said John Mureithi, a Nairobi resident, who is in Mombasa for the holidays.

Security has been beefed up in Mombasa with officers patrolling various areas to ensure criminal elements do not disrupt the holidaymakers.

Addressing the media, Mombasa deputy county commissioner Mr Ronald Mwiwawi said that anybody found engaging in criminal activities will face the wrath of the law.

“I urge you to be hospitable to our visitors and also share with the less privileged in the society because we coastal people are known for our kindness. Let us not allow a few criminal elements to destroy this honour the city is known for,” said Mwiwai.

The Mama Ngina Waterfront Park has been playing host to the first Mombasa International festival that has been running since Christmas Day and will conclude with a mega New Year’s Eve crossover party.

Organisers of the event said that they have been running different activities to entertain locals and visitors.

Apart from Mama Ngina Waterfront, Mombasa residents are expected to jam the popular beaches such as Jomo Kenyatta (Pirates), Nyali, Mtwapa, Jomvu and Shelly beaches for a warm swim.

“Holidaymakers have been enjoying a lot of entertainment, mouthwatering coastal cuisines and the coastal Swahili heritage,” said one of the event organizers Charles Kitula.

He urged Kenyans to turn out in large numbers this last weekend of the year to enjoy the array of entertainment lined up for them.
