Rift Valley win overall national title in Meru

Rift Valley retained the overall title as curtains came down on the national primary schools' championships in Meru yesterday.

Rift Valley amassed 50 points ahead of Western 44, Nyanza 42, Coast 36, Eastern 33, Nairobi 31, Central 21 and Northern 10 points.

Rift Valley finished on top in the overall boys’ performance in all disciplines with 22 points ahead of Eastern 20, Coast 18, Western 15, Nyanza 10, Central 9, Nairobi nine and Northern seven.

Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association secretary-general Mamai Etyang’ said they have selected teams in all disciplines that will represent the country in their inaugural East African school games in Arusha, Tanzania, later this month.

“We want to emulate our secondary counterparts when it comes to performance in the regional championships,” Etyang told Standard Sports.

In girls’ overall performance, Nyanza were the winners with 31 points ahead of Western 29, Rift Valley28, Coast 18, Eastern 13, Central 13, Nairobi 12 and Northern three.

Rift Valley won five titles in boys’ and girls’ volleyball and boys’ handball titles and emerged runner up in girls’ handball and boys’ ball and emerged third in netball.

Declan Lekishan of Rift Valley was voted the Most Valuable boy player while Nyanza’s Velma Awuor was the Most Valuable girl player.

Mercy Cheptoo of Rift Valley won the Golden Boot Award while the best goalkeepers were Woche Dula of Nairobi (boys) and Pamela Awuor of Nyanza.
