Gathi rules Nakuru as Somji wins Club Nite title in Mombasa

Philip Gathi made good use of his home club as he defeated a team of 130 golfers to be crowned winner of the 2017 Governor’s Shield golf tournament at the par 73 Nakuru golf course at the weekend.

Playing off handicap 20, Gathi posted an excellent total of 42 points in the one-day 18-hole Governor Kinuthia Mbugua Golf Championships at Nakuru Golf Club.

In both nines, the golfer rolled a total of eight pars and played a mixed bogey shots on the rest to lead the board and claim the 2017 Governor’s Shield, flooring golfers from Nakuru, Njoro, Naivasha, Nyahururu and Kericho.

“I am happy to have won this shield. The course was playing well and I hope to defend the title next year,” said Gathu.

Njoro’s handicap 8 John Mokaya, on 40 points, was the first runner-up, while home club’s handicap 19 Kirti Morjaria, who also has the same points, was the second runner-up.

Brigadier M.M.Macharia, playing off handicap 12, posted 39 points (20-19) to win the Men Winner’s prize.

Susan Ikua, playing off handicap 28, was the lady winner on 39 points (16-23), while school boy handicap 6 Daniel Kiragu won the junior prize on 36 points.

Nandi bears club captain Dr.E.Mutai, playing off handicap 17, was the guest winner on 37 points. Handicap 3 John Kamais, who had 35 gross, claimed the gross winner prize.

At the Thika course, Mary Wainaina was the Silver cat winner on a round total of 80 gross (38-42). Mariah Muthee was the bronze cat winner on 73 gross (35-38).
