Rugby: Omwela to contest for KRU Chairmanship

Nairobi-based Senior Lawyer Richard Omwela has declared that he will be vying for the Kenya Rugby Union Chairman's position in the forthcoming elections to be held on March 17 during the Annual General Meeting.

Omwela served as the Union chairman for two terms before he’s ousted by Mwangi Muthee in the 2011 elections.

Speaking after launching his candidacy for the chairmanship at RFUEA Grounds today, Omwela, who’s a lawyer by profession, said his first agenda would be to transform the game if elected.

“After much consideration and consultation with affiliates, family, stakeholders, well-wishers and friends, I now welcome the challenge to help return the game to its finest aspirations,” said Omwela.

“I’ve had a long discussion with many affiliates who encouraged me to contest for this position and return the game to where it was before.”

Omwela will be challenged by former vice Chairman Sasha Mutai who’s already expressed his interest in running for the top seat.

“I’ll contest for the chairmanship position. It's my democratic right. I was here before and I believe I’ve what it takes to take this game to the next level,” said Mutai.
