Lewis Hamilton will join Sir Jackie Stewart, Sir Stirling Moss and Sir Jack Brabham as the fourth F1 driver to be knighted when he is honoured at Windsor Castle on Wednesday.

The 36-year-old is due to attend an investiture at Windsor Castle to be honoured for services to motorsports.

His royal appointment comes just days after he was denied a record eighth Formula One crown.

Max Verstappen pipped the racing legend to the world title on Sunday after his battle with Hamilton came down to a one-lap shoot-out in Abu Dhabi.

The Red Bull driver stormed past his title rival in the closing stages of the Grand Prix season finale at the Yas Marina Circuit, having benefitted from a late safety car decision that bunched up the pack.

Mercedes are expected to appeal again after two protests they made against Verstappen's victory were rejected by stewards.

Despite the controversy surrounding the season finale, Hamilton was gracious in defeat.

"Firstly congratulations to Max and to his team. I think we did an amazing job this year,” he said.

“My team, everyone back at the factory, have worked so hard this whole year, it's been the most difficult of seasons.

“I'm so proud of them and I'm so grateful to be a part of the journey with them.

"This last part of the season we gave it absolutely everything and never gave up."

Hamilton's knighthood was announced in the Queen's New Year Honours last December. He was awarded an MBE in 2009 following his first world title.
