Awiti star shines brighter at KCB East Africa Golf Tournament

Alice Awiti steady rise in golf continued last weekend after shocking over 200 pro and junior golfers at the KCB East Africa Golf Tournament played at the par 72 Thika Sports Club.

The Nyanza Club golfer carded 51 Stableford points in the thrilling event to emerge tops in the ladies category.

For a golfer who just started playing golf two years ago, her achievements last year and this season is something to behold.

“Today the course was very tough, It was wet and the hold up was extreme with between 250-300 players. To see a player get 5 pars and 9 bogeys was no mean feat, hats off to you Awiti. I welcome others to come showcase their talent,” said Dr Edwin Mburu who finished with 30 points.

Awiti had five pars, 9 bogeys and 4 double bogeys in her ran up to finish as the guest winner. In fact, her 51 points were better than the Lady winner Bibiana Kariuki who had 34 points.

“I am grateful for the win. The greens were perfect for me this time round and I am looking forward for more wins. However, I challenge tournament organizers to reward golfers well  in the near future,” said the Safaricom staff.

The tournament attracted 294 golfers drawn from different parts of the country, of which the top two leading teams get a chance to take part in the KCB East Africa Grand Finale to be played at the Karen Sports Club in November 2023.

Meanwhile, Samuel Njunu, Linda Kinyua, Julius Wanyaga, and Susan Irungu displayed unparalleled golfing prowess to return a combined score of 139 points to emerge the winners of the KCB East Africa Golf Tournament.

Not far behind, a formidable team of Patrick Gakuo, Anthony Kabucho, Sam Njenga, and Dr. Edwin Mburu secured an impressive second-place finish with a cumulative of 125 points qualifying for the grand finale to be played in November.

 “We are happy to have emerged winners of this leg. We navigated the challenging course with exceptional precision and remarkable finesse, securing a well-deserved victory.

“The team's unwavering commitment, tireless dedication, and impressive teamwork were instrumental in securing this championship. We look forward to an entertaining grand finale in Karen,” said Njunu.

Thomas Thal of Thika Sports Club emerged as the overall winner after carding 40 points, Sam Njenga bagged the Men winners with 39 points while Bibiana Njoki won the lady winners having secured 38 points.

In the staff category, Scola Onsongo won the staff winner award with 40 points and Alice Awiti was the guest winner with 51 points.
