Former Leeds and Scotland midfielder Peter Lorimer has sadly passed away aged 74.

Lorimer formed part of Don Revie's successful Leeds sides of the 60s and 70s and remains the club's all-time leading goalscorer.

The Dundee-born star had two spells with the Yorkshire club, from 1962-79, before returning for another two-year stint in 1983.

He was capped 21 times for his country.

A statement from Leeds United reads: "It is with great sadness, Leeds United has learned of the passing of club legend Peter Lorimer this morning at the age of 74 following a long-term illness.

"Peter made a huge 705 appearances for the Whites over two spells and is the club’s record goal-scorer, having netted 238 times in all competitions.

"Peter’s contribution to Leeds United will never be forgotten and his passing leaves another huge hole in the Leeds United family.

"He will always remain a club icon and his legacy at Elland Road will live on.

"Our thoughts are naturally with Peter’s wife Sue and the rest of his family at this difficult time.

"Rest in peace, Peter."

Lorimer snubbed a move to Manchester United to join Leeds, making his debut aged just 15 in September 1962 - still the youngest player to do so in the club's history.

But it wasn't until the 1965/66 season that Lorimer made his mark on the first team, becoming a regular in the side.

His 30 goals in the 67/68 season helped Leeds win their first trophies of the Revie era - the League Cup and Fairs Cup - before going on to land the First Division title the following year.

Leeds repeated their title triumph in 1973/74, by which time they had won the Fairs Cup again in '71, and the FA Cup in '72.

Lorimer was prolific throughout his Leeds career as the club finished as runners-up in the 1972-73 Cup Winners' Cup and the 1974/75 European Cup, losing the latter to Bayern Munich in the final where his goal was disallowed for offside.

He was included in Scotland's squad for the 1974 World Cup, scoring once in the group stage.

After eventually leaving Leeds in 1979, Lorimer embarked on a journeyman-like period in his career, taking in spells at Cape Town City, Toronto Blizzard, York City and Vancouver Whitecaps, among others.

He returned to Leeds in 1983 where he was given the captaincy before breaking the club's goalscoring record.

His playing career finished with brief stints at Whitby Town and Hapoel Haifa, and later served Leeds as an ambassador for the club.
