Gor seek revenge against Sharks, Caf suspend Oktay

Gor Mahia will be seeking revenge against Kariobangi Sharks in today’s SportPesa Premier League (SPL) at Moi Stadium, Kisumu.

Sharks are the only team that has beat Gor Mahia twice this season -first in the Super Cup and the first leg of the league with identical 1-0 wins.

Since then, Kariobangi Sharks who were at one point touted as possible contenders for the title, have dipped in form while Gor Mahia have been on a resurgence picking good results locally and at the continental level.

Sharks, the SportPesa Shield and Super Cup champions, will, however, be without key midfielder Harrison Mwendwa.

Mwendwa was injured against Tusker in the mid-week tie and coach William Muluya said the player will be out for one month.

Duke Abuya is back and will lead his team’s attack against Gor Mahia having previously scored against the league champions.

Gor Mahia go into this match on the back of a 4-0 win over Zoo Kericho away and buoyed by an impressive winning record in Kisumu.

Coach Hassan Oktay has all his best players for the match.

Tusker travel to Chemelil this afternoon hoping to continue with their winning ways after thrashing Kariobangi Sharks 3-1 in mid-week.

Elsewhere, Gor Mahia have been dealt a big blow after Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed the suspension of coach Hassan Oktay ahead of next week’s Confederations Cup match against RS Berkane of Morocco.

Oktay was expelled for protesting against refereeing decisions during their final Group D match against Pero Atletico from Angola at Kasarani Stadium.

He will miss the first leg of the quarter-final set to be staged in Nairobi. This would affect the record Kenyan league champions even as they prepare for CAF league matches.

Apart from the coach, Gor Mahia will also be without team captain Harun Shakava, Ernest Wendo, Jacques Tuyisenge and Shafik Batambuze.

Shakava will miss only one leg of the quarter-final match but the rest of the players will miss both legs. Goalkeeper Peter Odhiambo will be available for selection.
