Detectives in Kenya’s Coast region have intensified operations against drug trafficking, leading to multiple arrests and the recovery of suspected narcotics in a series of coordinated raids.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Anti-Narcotics Unit in the Coast region worked alongside the Operation Support Unit from DCI headquarters to target the sale, distribution and consumption of illegal drugs.

The latest operations were carried out following intelligence reports and focused on several areas across Mombasa and Kwale counties.

In Kisimani, detectives raided a residence linked to Daudi Ahmed Ali, where they recovered a whitish powdery substance wrapped in clear polythene believed to be narcotics. Officers also seized several unserviceable mobile phones suspected to be stolen.

The suspect was arrested and taken to Bamburi Police Station, where he was booked. The items were secured for weighing, sampling and forensic analysis.

In a separate operation in the Majaoni area of Shanzu, detectives searched a rental house belonging to John Wangumo Wachiri.

During the search, officers recovered a red shopping bag containing loose dry plant material suspected to be narcotics, along with 21 sachets of similar material packaged in clear polythene.

Police also recovered Sh3,700 believed to be proceeds of crime. The suspect remains in custody at Bamburi Police Station as investigations continue.

Elsewhere, at Corner Musa in Ukunda Township, detectives conducted another search that led to the recovery of 21 large rolls of dry plant material suspected to be cannabis.

The suspect, Popin Mutisya, was booked at Ukunda Police Station while the recovered exhibits were secured for further analysis.

In Lungalunga’s Jua Kali area, detectives arrested Mwaura Katana Mgaza after seizing 40 large rolls of plant material suspected to be cannabis sativa. He was taken to Lungalunga Police Station, where the exhibits were processed.

The DCI said the fight against narcotics trafficking and substance abuse remains a priority across the Coast region and the country.
