Amidst an outpouring of grief, the final send-off for the esteemed freedom fighter Field Marshal Muthoni Kirima has been scheduled for September 22.

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, accompanied by family members, made the solemn announcement during a press conference held at the Nyeri County offices.

According to Governor Kahiga, the delay in laying Kirima to rest is in the hopes that President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua will attend the burial.

"As you are aware, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is currently out of the county and will return next week. President William Ruto has international commitments this week. Therefore, we have decided to postpone the burial to the 22nd of this month," he said.

Kahiga added that the requiem mass will take place at Kinunga Stadium, and her final resting place will be at her cherished family home in Ihwa village, Tetu Nyeri County.

Governor Kahiga added that the family intends to fulfill Kirima's wish to have her hair shaved earlier this year preserved at the Mau Mau Memorial Museum.

"The family holds dear the desire of Muthoni to have her unshaved hair, which stands as a symbol of her strength and resilience, placed at the Mau Mau Memorial. We know its whereabouts, and we will ensure it is taken there," he said.

The ceremonial shaving of Kirima's hair, which took place at her residence in Pembe Tatu Estate, Nyeri town, was a momentous occasion attended by former First Lady Margaret Kenyatta. This poignant act will serve as a lasting reminder of Kirima's indomitable spirit.

In a tragic turn of events, Field Marshal Muthoni Kirima passed away last week after a brief illness while visiting the city.

Her body currently rests at Lee's Funeral Home as the nation mourns the loss of a remarkable leader.

Shortly before her untimely demise, Kirima, accompanied by General Mathenge's wife, Miriam, had the honour of meeting the President and his deputy at Sagana State Lodge in Nyeri.
