World marathon champion Samuel Kamau Wanjiru was charged with threatening to kill his wife and illegally possessing a firearm.

Wanjiru also faced another two counts of threatening his watchman and harming him.

He appeared before Nyahururu Senior Resident Magistrate Alice Mong’are.

The court heard the athlete committed the three offences on December 28.

The prosecution led by Inspector John Ruto said the athlete allegedly threatened to kill his wife Teresiah Njeri and later threatened his watchman.

The court heard he arrived at his Muthaiga residence on Wednesday night when a confrontation ensued between him and the wife.

He was alleged to have vowed to shoot Njeri if she did not oblige to his demands.

This forced the wife to flee for safety, allegedly prompting the accused to vent his anger on his watchman. Wanjiru beat up William Masinde, injuring him.

The court also heard the accused was found with an AK 47 rifle without a firearm certificate.

Arrested at home

Detectives arrested him at his home and he appeared in court yesterday morning after spending a night at Nyahururu Police Station.

Through his lawyer Ndegwa Wahome, the marathon champion denied all the charges.

The magistrate freed him on a Sh300,000 bond and a surety in same amount.

The case will be mentioned on February 9.
