Former Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) Women’s National League champions Kenya Prisons yesterday ended their regular season with a victory against Young Spikers to consolidate top spot in the standings.
Prisons, who had fought to secure two points in a grueling five-set duel with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Saturday evening, eased past their upcoming opponents in straight sets of 25-10, 25-9, and 25-16 at the Nyayo Gymnasium. The win saw Prisons, who are looking to reclaim the trophy that has eluded them for years, cement their place at the peak of the table with 26 points out of the possible 30.
They won nine matches and lost one to defending champions Kenya Pipeline, and will now wait for their final ranking after the conclusion of all regular season matches.
Former holders KCB Bank ended their weekend with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-14,25-22) win over the Kenya Army to crown four successful days out.
Having bagged 12 points from four matches, they are currently second on the table with 22 points from eight matches. The bankers who recently won the continental club championship silver could end the regular season above Kenya Prisons if they bag maximum points from their remaining two encounters. Last season’s league silver medalists DCI recovered from Saturday’s loss to Kenya Prisons to see off Postbank 3-1 and register their seventh win. DCI, perhaps still exhausted from the previous day's battle with Kenya Prisons, fought tooth and nail against a relentless Postbank side to take the first set 27-25. The bankers were superior in the second set, easily winning 25-15, but the investigators recovered in time to take the third and fourth sets 25-19 and 25-14 to carry the day.
The Sleuths are currently third with 22 points, while Postbank is fourth with 18. Pipeline, who are the only side yet to taste defeat, are fifth with 17 points from six matches. Yesterday, they beat newbies A-Plus in straight sets of 25-10, 25-9, and 25-16 to register their sixth win. With no defeat and four matches in hand, the oilers have the highest chances of ending the regular season at the top of the table.
However, they have to win all their matches, including one against second-placed KCB, who bundled them out of this year’s Africa Club Championship title race in the semi-finals.
Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), Nairobi Prisons, and Kenya Army complete the top eight and remain in the race for play-off slots. KDF, who were not in action yesterday, have 12 points with two games in hand, whereas Nairobi Prisons have nine. Kenya Army, who have played eight, won two and lost six, are eighth with six points.
