Battle for national glory down to last four

[Benjamin Sakwa, Standard] Battle for this year's Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Term Two games titles will hit feverpitch as teams battle for final slots in Kakamega today. Debutants Agai Mixed Secondary School from Nyanza will square it out with Rift Valley's St Joseph's Boys High School Kitale in boys' football duel. Agai finished second in Group A behind homeboys Musingu High School after falling 1-0 to their hosts in a tightly contested match at the Mumias Complex. St Joseph's also maintained a good run to top Group B with nine points after winning all their preliminary encounters. Defending champions Highway Secondary School from Nairobi and Kirangari Secondary School were all square in all aspects with a committee set to separate the two sides based on cards picked. The duo had four points each and had played to a 3-3 draw. Musingu will only know their opponent after the decision is made. Defending girls' football champions Butere High School will lock horns with Nyanza's Kobala Mixed Secondary School in hunt for a final slot. The unbeaten Red Commandos must beat Kobala to remain on course to retaining their title. Butere have had a good run and are yet to lose or concede a goal. They topped Group A with nine points while Nasokol Girls, who tackle Madira Girls, finished second with four points. Madira led Group B with nine while Kobala had six. Former national and East Africa volleyball champions Malava Boys High School will lock horns with Nyanza's Gogo Mixed Secondary School in their last four duel. Malava, who returned to the national stage after many years in the cold, rallied from two sets down to beat Coast's Mwaluphamba Secondary School 3-2 (15-25, 23-15, 25-12, 25-18, 15-13) to win all their matches and top the pool with eight points. Mwaluphampa will face off with holders Cheptil High School from Rift Valley in the other semi-final. Malava coach Shadrack Tovoko said they are handling one game at a time with the aim of playing in tomorrow's final. "It is good to be back on the national stage and we are hoping for the best and focusing only on the task at hand. It took us long to build a team after the exit of senior players and the Covid-19 break worsened the situation for us, but we are finally here," Tovoko said. Reigning girls' volleyball champions Kwanthanze Secondary School from Eastern will clash with old foes Soweto Academy from Nairobi. Kwanthanze, who are seeking to retain their title, won all their B matches to book a date with Soweto, who finished second with six in Group B. East Africa champions Kesogon Secondary School from Rift Valley will play home side Bishop Sulumeti Girls High School. In netball, defending champions Oyugi Ogango Girls Secondary from Nyanza will renew rivalry with former holders Kaya Tiwi Secondary School from Coast. Oyugi Ogango will be looking to extend their good run against Kaya Tiwi who they beat 58-20 in the preliminaries of last year's games. Kaya Tiwi on the other hand will be out to avenge their loss and also qualify for the finals and make amends for last year's lackluster show that saw them finish a distant sixth. The second semis encounter will see Rift Valley champions St Joseph's Girls High School Kitale clash with home girls St Monica Bukokholo. Bukokholo finished second in Group A with four points behind unbeaten Oyugi Ogango who had six. St Joseph's topped Group A with six points while Kaya Tiwi was second with four from two wins and a loss.
